The Community Shop

Affordable food. Reduced waste. Local dignity.

At Myrtle House, we believe everyone should be able to feed their family well without stress, stigma, or compromise. That’s why we created the Community Shop, a low-cost food outlet that uses quality surplus food to ease pressure on household budgets and reduce waste in our town.

Whether you’re facing financial difficulty, budgeting on a low income, or simply trying to make your money go further, the Community Shop is open to everyone who needs it.

It’s more than a shop. It’s a place of dignity, connection, and practical support.

How It Works

We collect surplus food and retail stock from local supermarkets and suppliers - good quality items that would otherwise go to waste, and offer them through our shop at a greatly reduced cost.

Friendly, welcoming environment with volunteers on hand to help

It’s shopping, but with purpose. Every pound you spend helps reduce waste and supports your neighbours too.

Why Surplus Food?

Each year, tonnes of perfectly edible food goes to landfill, while many families struggle to put food on the table. The Community Shop bridges that gap, taking food that would be wasted and getting it into the hands of people who truly need it.

It’s a win for:

People – affordable food without stigma

The Planet – less waste, more sustainability

The Community – supporting local resilience

What You'll Find

Stock varies week to week depending on surplus availability, but often includes:

Fresh fruit and vegetables

Bread, pasta, and rice

Canned goods and cupboard staples

Dairy and chilled items

Toiletries and cleaning products

We aim to keep our shelves stocked with nutritious, family-friendly food - and a warm welcome every time you visit.
